Why we search the wall for a switch when the room is dark?

i know it's kind of silly to ask but is that instinct playing? whenever i enter a dark room, i would touch the wall beside me to look for a switch. then i touched something else. cold and wet long and sticky (a tooth paste) LOL. psychologists, need to know.
